"The Chair" by Amber Lyons

The Chair

Amber Lyons, Westfield State University

Artist Statement: The concept of new technology is constantly evolving as society advances. Commonplace objects like a chair take on thousands of forms across time, culture, and context.

I practice the fundamentals of art by drawing common objects. This artwork was created while studying the fine details of a wooden chair. I focus on the object’s relationship with the space around it as much as I focus on the object itself. By examining something seemingly mundane and recreating it, I can appreciate how these basic forms have laid the foundation for the innovations and products we see today. Whether it's a desk chair, park bench, or cushioned couch, these objects adapt and change to meet our needs. Drawing everyday objects allows me to reflect on their significance and transformation over time.
